HISTORICAL PHOTOS

The photographs below were taken during the 1930's and 40's by the
USDA Farm Security Administration. They are part of a collection now housed at the Library of Congress.

The USDA Farm Security Administration's "New Deal" photography project was implemented under the leadership of Henry Wallace, President Franklin D. Roosevelt's renowned Secretary of Agriculture (1933-1940). Click here for the wholistic agriculture and rural policies of the FSA at that time.

We at the Federation of Southern Cooperatives/Land Assistance Fund wish to thank the Photography Center of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for placing the photos below on their website a number of years ago. In particular, we thank Bill Tarpening, former director of the Photography Center, for taking the initiative to offer these photos to the public and for his contemporary photos of Black farmers also available on the USDA site.
